I have some new public speaking tips for you, from reality TV – who would have thought!!!
I’m flipping channels and find America’s Next Top Model. I found speaking tips here last year also.
In this particular show, the models are on funky stilts, with safety cables attached. They are to double up and experiment with each other to capture a pose for the photographers.
The judges, speaking to the models: I thought I was listening to presentation coaches!
Are you ready ?!
1. “She’s stuck keeping that model face.”
What do you look like up in front of the room – your facial expressions? Do you have the same expression throughout your presentation? You know, the safe, professional one that you think will get you …respect, a promotion, a sale, contract, etc. Add some variation.
2. “If you not going to deliver anything, don’t get up there.”
They are supposed to deliver a great pose. You’re supposed to deliver a great presentation.
3. “She’s not afraid to go there” and “She takes no risks.”
Safe and predictable is boring. Make parts of it memorable!
4. “Now why didn’t you do some of that funky stuff when you were up there ??!!”
One model was goofy and fun off stage. Until she got in front of the camera.
Are we seeing the real you up there or you in “Speaker Mode”? You are much more intriguing. See the next one, # 5. I would have never connected the two.
5. “Work your expressions. I don’t know what you’re thinking.”
Is that classic or what? I never thought we had to show the audience our thinking. Legendary speaker Les Brown says, the “private you” comes across in the “public you”, but I guess we can hide that. Not the better speakers. How about you?
6. “I didn’t feel the beat.”
The audience is going to remember how they feel long after they forget your painstakingly crafted phrases. You know, the ones you rewrite to get them just right.
The models were on stilts and were uncomfortable. Kind of like a beginning speaker.
Are you up there on wobbly stilts or are you in the running for paid speaker status?
